Nanchang Hangkong University (NCHU) is a multidisciplinary university with a primary focus on engineering and well-rounded development in science, humanities, management, economics, law, education, and the arts. The university is guided by the principles of “student-centered education, quality foundation, talent-based strength, openness, and distinct development.” With a firm commitment to enhancing internal quality, NCHU continuously strives to improve its educational standards and has been recognized as an excellent university in the Ministry of Education’s undergraduate teaching quality assessment.
1. History
Founded in 1952, NCHU was among the first institutions authorized to grant bachelor’s degrees in China. The university began offering master’s programs in 1985 and obtained master’s degree conferral rights in 1990. NCHU was formerly affiliated with the Ministry of Aviation Industry, the Ministry of Aerospace Industry, and the China Aviation Industry Corporation. Since 1999, it has operated under a co-management system between central and local governments, with a primary focus on provincial management. NCHU is jointly supported by the Jiangxi Provincial Government and the National Defense Science and Technology Industry Bureau.
2. Unique Characteristics
Adhering to the motto “Self-Renewal, Unity of Knowledge and Action,” the university fosters a culture of diligence, civility, realism, and innovation, while promoting a spirit of solidarity and resilience. With its commitment to serving Jiangxi province, China’s national defense, and the local community, NCHU has developed expertise in aviation and defense-related fields. The university offers 22 aviation and defense-related programs, accounting for 31% of its academic offerings. Specialized programs include Aircraft Design and Engineering, Aircraft Power Engineering, Aircraft Manufacturing Engineering, Flight Technology, Aviation Service Arts and Management, and Aircraft Airworthiness Technology. Today, NCHU stands out as a comprehensive undergraduate institution with a distinct emphasis on engineering and a strong focus on aviation.
3. Academic Structure
The university comprises 17 specialized colleges, including the School of Aerospace, the School of Materials Science and Engineering, the School of Environmental and Chemical Engineering, the School of Aeronautical Manufacturing Engineering, the School of Information Engineering, and the School of Foreign Languages. Additionally, there are four administrative colleges, such as the International Education College, the School of Continuing Education, and the College of Innovation and Entrepreneurship. NCHU has also established the School of Aviation Manufacturing Industry in Jingdezhen. Research infrastructure includes a post-doctoral research station, a post-doctoral innovation practice base, a national engineering laboratory, a national engineering research center, 39 provincial or ministerial key laboratories and research centers, and two national experimental teaching demonstration centers.
4. Academic Disciplines and Programs
NCHU has 17 master’s degree authorization disciplines and 14 professional master’s programs. It offers three Jiangxi Province first-class disciplines: Environmental Science and Engineering, Aerospace Science and Technology, and Instrument Science and Technology, along with five national defense-focused disciplines. Currently, NCHU provides 71 undergraduate programs, including 21 national first-class undergraduate programs, five national specialized programs, one comprehensive reform pilot program, and 28 provincial first-class programs. Moreover, 11 programs have passed the Ministry of Education’s engineering accreditation, and two have been evaluated by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development. The university is part of the Ministry of Education’s “Excellence in Engineer Education and Training Program,” with six national pilot programs and six provincial pilot programs in this initiative. Disciplines such as Materials Science, Engineering, and Chemistry rank in the top 0.6% globally in the ESI rankings.
5. International Collaboration
NCHU actively promotes international cooperation, establishing partnerships with over 70 universities in 30 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, France, Germany, Japan, South Korea, and Russia. This collaboration supports student exchanges and faculty development, with the university’s number of students sponsored by the China Scholarship Council being among the highest in Jiangxi. NCHU has developed five joint undergraduate and credit-transfer programs with universities in the UK, US, Australia, and Ireland, enrolling over 1,600 students. As a “Chinese Government Scholarship” host institution, NCHU offers undergraduate programs in Aviation Engineering, Business Administration, Civil Engineering, and Computer Technology, as well as master’s programs in Aerospace Science and Technology, Electronics, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, and Management, all taught in English. The university currently hosts around 300 international students from 34 countries, including Morocco, Bangladesh, Russia, Turkey, and Pakistan. In recent years, NCHU has enhanced the structure and quality of its international student programs, earning both provincial and national awards for excellence in international education.
