Prof. Yong Yan is a Royal Academy of Engineering International Chair and an IEEE Fellow. He assumed the role of Director and Chief Scientist of the International Research Center for Carbon Neutralization at Beihang University in July 2024. Prior to joining Beihang University, he served as Professor of Engineering, Director of Research and Innovation, and Director of the Measurement and Control Research Centre at the University of Kent, UK. He received his BEng and MEng degrees from Tsinghua University (1980-1988) and his PhD from the University of Teesside, UK (1989-1992). With over 30 years of experience in research and teaching, his expertise lies in instrumentation and automation. His current research focuses on sensing technologies for the CO₂ capture and storage chain, multiphase flow measurement, combustion monitoring, and intelligent perception.
A pioneer in electrostatic sensing and digital imaging for industrial processes, Prof. Yan has published over 550 papers, including more than 260 SCI journal articles and 60+ papers in IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement. His work has garnered over 12,000 citations (h-index: 57). He has supervised 50 PhD students to completion and received more than 20 international and national awards, including the IEEE I&M Society Best Application Award (2017).
