Yangzhi Award

Launched in 2016, the Yangzhi Award honors trailblazers who have devoted their entire careers to China’s NDT industry. A well-known line from The Book of Songs · Minor Odes states: “Lofty mountains evoke reverence; noble conduct deserves emulation.” The term “Yangzhi” stands for reverence and admiration. Following open nomination and committee deliberation, the Organizing Committee of the 2026 FENDT Forum decided to confer the Yangzhi Award on Mr. Qiang Tianpeng.

Prof. Lu Chao from Nanchang Hangkong University presented the award to Mr. Qiang Tianpeng (right presenter, left recipient)

Profile of Mr. Qiang Tianpeng

Born in 1951, Mr. Qiang Tianpeng is a Researcher-level Senior Engineer and Senior Pressure Equipment Inspector. He currently serves as Chief Expert of Jiangsu Zhongte Chuangye Equipment Inspection Co., Ltd. and Honorary Chairman of the Council of the Far East NDT New Technology & Application Forum. His past key appointments include Vice President and Chief Engineer of the Special Equipment Safety Supervision Inspection Institute of Jiangsu Province, Member of the Special Equipment Safety Technical Committee under the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, Deputy Secretary-General of the National Qualification Examination Committee for Special Equipment NDT Personnel, and Deputy Director of China Nondestructive Testing Standardization Committee (TC56).

For decades, Mr. Qiang Tianpeng has stood at the forefront of the domestic NDT industry. He presided over or participated in the drafting and revision of over 20 national and industrial standards, and compiled more than 10 NDT textbooks and monographs as chief editor or co-author. Through over 20 years of joint efforts with his team, the Far East NDT New Technology & Application Forum has grown into one of the world’s four major international NDT exchange platforms, greatly elevating China’s global influence in NDT and advancing the country’s transition from a large NDT country to a technologically powerful one.

Deeply rooted in frontline engineering work, he has solved countless technical bottlenecks in major national equipment manufacturing and key infrastructure projects. He successfully resolved more than ten critical equipment quality incidents in national key projects, avoiding massive economic losses for the state and enterprises. He developed high-sensitivity computed radiography capable of detecting micro-defects (φ0.1 mm point defects and linear defects of φ0.05 × 0.4 mm) in welds of large thin-walled complex structures, overcoming the testing difficulty of diaphragm capsules for core aerospace models and removing key technical barriers for the Chang’e Lunar Exploration Program. Over two decades, he developed four exclusive testing technologies for heat exchangers with special structures, bringing China’s heat exchanger inspection capacity to world-class standards. He played an irreplaceable role in quality supervision for the localization of major natural gas purification equipment and the leakage treatment of heat exchangers at Sinopec Puguang Purification Plant, winning the First-Class and Second-Class Provincial Science and Technology Progress Awards respectively.

Climbing Award
